Greek mythology

Sisyphus was founder and king of Éfira. He used all kind of clever tricks to find ways to avoid death:

When Tánatos came to find him, Sisyphus put him shackles, so that nobody died until Ares released him and delivered to Sisyphus to Hades. However, before dying, he told his wife that when he left did not offer the usual sacrifice to the dead. So, once in the underground world, complained that his wife was not complying with her duties, and convinced to Hades to allow him to return to the upper world to punish her. But when he was again in Éfira, he refused to return to underground world and lived several years more, until it was forced to return by Hermes.

There his famous punishment was imposed, which was to push a huge rock up to the top of a mountain, but when it was just about to arrive, the rock always rolled down and Sisyphus should repeat the process, starting from the beginning, again and again.

In the "Choose Your Own Adventure" collection books (1979), at the end of the story you can go back to the point of bifurcation, and choose a different path, like in the movies "Groundhog Day" (1993), "The Butterfly Effect" (2004), "50 First Dates" (2004), "Source Code" (2011), "Edge of Tomorrow" (2014) and in the video game "The Walking Dead" (PS3, 2012).

(1866) Sisyphus is related with the exploration of other possibilities, other that the expected or what has already been lived, like in the movies "Family Man" (2001), "Back to the future" (1985) and the video game "Prince of Persia - Warrior Within" (PS2, 2004).
