Medusa ('guardian', 'protectress') was a monster, a Gorgon, generally described as having the face of a hideous human female with living venomous snakes in place of hair. Gazing directly into her eyes would turn onlookers to stone. Medusa was beheaded by the hero Perseus, who thereafter used her head as a weapon until he gave it to the goddess Athena to place on her shield.
Medusa was a priestess in the temple of Athena and, originally, was a ravishingly beautiful maiden, "the jealous aspiration of many suitors," but after being raped by Poseidon in his own temple, Athena, enraged, confered defensive power to her by transforming her beautiful hair in snakes and making her face so terrible to behold that the mere sight of it would turn onlookers to stone.
Medusa was pregnant by Poseidon when was beheaded by the hero Perseus while she was sleeping. With the help of Athena and Hermes, who gave him the winged sandals, a helmet of invisibility of Hades, a sword and shield mirrored, the hero killed Medusa approaching her without looking at her directly, but looking at the reflection of the Gorgon in the shield to avoid being petrified.
