Greek mythology

Daphne rejected many potential lovers. He had always shown her preference for hunting and exploring forests. Her father, a river god, would have liked to have grandchildren, but she asked him to let her remain single. Even so, her father warned her that she was too beautiful to keep all her suitors aloof.
Apollo, continually went after her, begging her to stay with him, but Daphne continued to flee until the gods intervened helping Apollo to reach her. When Daphne realized that Apollo was about to catch her, she asked her father for help and suddenly her skin became tree bark, her hair became leaves and her arms became the branches of a laurel. When her feet rooted in the earth, Apollo embraced the branches, but even then, they contracted.

Apollo promised that he would love her forever and that the branches of the tree would crown the heads of the heroes. In addition, he gave it eternal youth and immortality so that it would always be green.

Unrequested love

Love letter from the movie "Snow Falling on Cedars" (1999): "Dear Ishmael... I can't think of anything more painful... than writing this letter to you. I feel I have to tell you the truth. When we met the last time in the cedar tree... and I felt your body move against mine... I knew with certainty... that everything was wrong. I knew we could never be right together... and that soon I would have to tell you so. And now... with this letter... I am telling you.

This is the last time I'll write to you. I'm not yours anymore. I don't love you, Ishmael. I can think of no more honest way to say it. When I heard your heart beating... as we lay together... I felt closer to you than I had ever been to anyone. And I knew... when I heard your heart beating... it could not last forever. I loved you... and I didn't love you at the same moment. Whenever we were together... I knew it. I'm going to move on with my life... as best I can. And I hope that you will, too.

You must live. I must say good-bye to you. I know you will do great things in this world. You have a gentle heart. A good heart. I will never forget you... and the time we spent together."
